AIO, AEO and GEO: preparing a website for AI answers
Search experiences increasingly include answers generated with artificial intelligence. For a business, the practical question is straightforward: does the website explain the offer clearly enough for people and search systems to understand it?
What do the abbreviations mean?
SEO means preparing a website for search engines. AEO is used for organising content around clear questions and answers. GEO refers to visibility in responses generated by AI systems. AIO is used with different meanings for AI-related optimisation, so ask which specific activities a supplier includes.
You do not need to memorise the abbreviations. What matters is understanding what will actually change on the website and how that change can be checked. New labels do not replace a working site and useful information.
Start with a potential customer’s questions
Who is the service for? What problem does it solve? What does the customer receive? What is excluded? What affects the price and timescale? Answer these questions on the page instead of relying on general phrases such as “complete solutions for success”.
Hypothetical example: instead of “we optimise your digital ecosystem”, a company could say “we check where visitors get stuck and simplify the contact form”. The second version explains an activity that a reader can understand and verify.
Make the information easy to follow
Use descriptive headings, short paragraphs and explanations of specialist terms. Answer the question directly, then provide the necessary detail. Connect relevant pages so readers can naturally continue.
Label illustrative examples and support claims about results. Structured data is technical information describing the page for certain systems. It should match the visible content and does not guarantee inclusion in an AI answer.
What can be checked?
You can check whether a page is accessible, its explanations are clear and company information is accurate. You can also monitor observed search visibility. You cannot control every AI response or guarantee that a particular system will cite your business.
Where should you start?
Choose an important page and read it as someone unfamiliar with the industry. If it does not quickly explain the offer and how to start a conversation, rewriting that page is more useful than adding new abbreviations.
