Online store build: what to decide before choosing a platform

Building an online store does not start with choosing a platform. It starts with what you sell, how you deliver, how inventory is managed, how invoicing works, how orders are measured and who manages the store after launch. The platform matters, but it does not solve the operating model by itself.

Decisions that come before design

  • product types, variants, attributes and categories;
  • payment methods and commercial conditions;
  • delivery, returns and customer communication;
  • ERP, invoicing, CRM, email marketing or marketplaces;
  • who publishes products and who checks errors;
  • which reports show whether the store is working.

Shopify, WooCommerce and other platforms

Shopify can be suitable when you want a hosted platform and requirements covered by available features. WooCommerce can be suitable when WordPress and content matter or when technical flexibility is important. Other platforms should be assessed only when your requirements justify them.

Do not build the catalogue without operations

A good-looking catalogue is not enough if stock, prices, orders and returns cannot be tracked. For an existing store, operational improvement may matter more than a new theme.

What should be handed over

At the end, there should be a public store, a tested order flow, clear access, editing rules, tracking and a list of what remains to be operated. Without handover, every small change depends on the implementer.
