AIO, AEO and GEO: preparing a website for AI answers
AIO, AEO and GEO describe different attempts to make content easier for search engines and AI systems to understand and use. They do not replace technical SEO and they do not guarantee inclusion in generated answers. They require clearer structure: explicit questions, verifiable answers, consistent entities and information that is easy to interpret.
The practical difference between SEO, AEO and GEO
SEO focuses on crawling, indexing, relevance and ranking in search results. AEO emphasises direct answers to questions. GEO refers to visibility in generative experiences, where a system may synthesise information from several sources. AIO is often used as a label for optimisation in AI Search and AI Overview contexts.
What you can control
- each page should have a clear purpose and main question;
- answers should be concrete, not only slogans;
- services should link to examples, guides and methodology;
- schema should accurately describe the organisation, services, articles and FAQs;
- claims should include context and limits;
- the site should be accessible, fast and indexable on mobile.
What you cannot control directly
You cannot force Google, ChatGPT, Gemini or another AI system to cite a page. You cannot guarantee that a generated answer will preserve your wording. You can only make the information clearer, easier to extract and consistent with the company’s identity.
What a good AEO/GEO page looks like
A useful page answers real questions: who the service is for, what problem it solves, what the client receives, what is not included, how success is measured and what happens next. That structure helps humans, search engines and AI systems.
Where to start
Start with important commercial pages and the questions asked before contact. For audit and implementation, see the SEO, AEO and GEO service and the audit methodology.
